How do i know what to major in if i want to study animals/ecology?

im not sure, im a sophmore and my mom wants me to do a little research but im not sure what to research. im not sure if zoology is it because i dont want to study animals itself. i want to help the population of endagered animals increase and save their habitats so im not sure if its ecology…can someone help?
